THE California Japanese American Alumni Association proudly announced the award of eight scholarships for the 1999-2000 academic year. The committee was pleased to receive quality applicants from various disciplines ranging from Asian-American studies, biology, communication, engineering, dental health, international relations, psychology and social welfare. The selected recipients represented nearly all campuses, including UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and UC San Francisco.
Our top scholarship, the Mo Noguchi Memorial Award, is presented to Ann Miyagi in the amount of $3000 this year. Ann studied at UC Berkeley specializing in social welfare policy for the aging. Her community service work at nursing home facilities and other projects reflects her interests to design better policies for the elderly, the poor, and disadvantaged minorities. Recently, she worked as a case manager helping seniors through the nonprofit Japanese American Services of the East Bay (JASEB). Ann is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Social Welfare at UCLA.
Our recipient of the George Kondo Memorial Award for community service is Charlene Sakoda. With her extensive community involvement and broad extramural activities it is fitting that she receive this $2500 scholarship. Charlene is an undergraduate at UC Riverside with a double major in Biology and Business. While excelling academically, she also helped to establish the UC Riverside taiko group. She has served as a peer mentor for over three years and also a volunteer at Riverside General Hospital. Charlene hopes to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
