CJAAA Scholarship Recipients
1998-1999

On November 21, 1998 the California Japanese American Alumni Association (CJAAA) announced its scholarship recipients for the 1998-1999 academic year. Scholarship applications were accepted from students studying agriculture, architecture, business, engineering and law. From this year on, CJAAA will accept applications from any Japanese-American student attending any of the nine University of California campuses.

The top recipient and winner of the Mo Noguchi Award is Emi Yoshioka from Walnut Creek.  Emi, who attends UC Berkeley, has just returned from a one year UC EAP experience in Japan and will receive a $2000 CJAAA Scholarship. Other scholarship recipients include Bart Ito of UC Davis ($2000 scholarship) who pursues a career in landscape architecture, Amy Kimura of UC Berkeley who has been active in Japanese-American campus activities and scholar-athlete Tadashi Kaneko who studies engineering at UC Davis both received $1000 scholarships. In addition, we selected the following applicants for Honorable Mention Awards that range from $750 to $500: Kristin Higaki of San Jose, attending UC Berkeley; Christopher Oka of Monrovia, attending UCLA; Angie Onoda of Cerritos, attending UC San Diego; and Patrick Tabuchi of Rowland Heights, attending UC Berkeley.

The applicants were judged on the following criteria: academic excellence, commitment to community service, personal attributes and financial need. It is fitting that our top recipient is recognized with the Moriaki "Mo" Noguchi Scholarship Award. Mo Noguchi was a founding member and long-time president of the California Japanese American Alumni Association. The existence of the CJAAA scholarship program is mostly due to the work of Mo Noguchi.

Funding for the scholarships originally came from a trust fund from the 1972 sale of the Japanese Men's Student Club dormitory known as Euclid Hall after World War II. Built by pioneering Issei and Nisei with monies donated from the Japanese American community throughout California, the dorm was located near U.C. Berkeley campus. It met the desperate housing needs of Nisei students battling harsh discriminatory practices. These pioneers viewed education as the key to their efforts to improve their status for themselves and their children to a living worthy of their character and abilities. It is in this spirit that the CJAAA scholarship program seeks to honor their efforts to ensure new generations can meet the rising costs of higher education.

All scholarship and award recipients will be recognized at the CJAAA bi-annual Big Game Dinner at the Silver Dragon in Oakland at 6:30 pm. Anyone interested in attending can call CJAAA President, Katherine Yoshii at (510) 559-9277.

For the 1999-2000 academic year, CJAAA will accept applications from professional, graduate and undergraduate students at any UC campus. To request an application, write to P.O.
