CALIFORNIA JAPANESE AMERICAN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION held its annual scholarship awards luncheon at Yoshi's restaurant in Jack London Square, Oakland, on April 14, 2002. Mariko Nakanishi, who attends Hastings School of Law, was the recipient of the Mo Noguchi Award for outstanding scholastic achievement. Kay Fischer of UC Berkeley won the George Kondo Award for outstanding community service.
Other Bay area recipients in attendance were Kurt Wong (Berkeley), Gayna Nakajo (Berkeley), Ray Nagatani, Jr. (Berkeley), Mihoko Ito (Hastings) and Kathleen Kondo (Berkeley). Scholarship recipients that were unable to attend were Minna Kurata (Berkeley), currently studying abroad in Japan, Amy Nawatani (Santa Barbara), Nancy Shinozuka (UCLA) and Kimberly Chew (Davis).
